On the New York Islanders …

Brian Compton: Islanders owner Jon Ledecky on John Tavares: “The ball really is in John’s court. He’s being very contemplative about it, he’s thinking about it. It’s a huge decision in a young man’s life. We want him to take his time and we want him to come to the decision that’s best for him and his family.”

Brian Compton: Ledecky continued: “We love John Tavares. We want John Tavares to remain here for his entire career as an Islander, and we want him lifting that fifth Cup.”

Brian Compton: John Tavares on the Isles playing some games at the Coliseum: “Obviously, this place means a lot to the organization and our fans, and to us as players, including myself. So many great memories here. It’ll be great to be able to come back here. No doubt, I think it’s a positive thing for everybody.”

Brian Compton: Tavares on free agency: “Everything that goes into my daily life will impact my decision. I think I’ve said in the past, the Islanders belong on Long Island. Belmont’s obviously great news for the team. I think playing at the Coliseum’s great news; we did it for over 40 years.”

On the Central Division …

Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic: The Nashville Predators will be looking to add some scoring help up front leading up to the NHL trade deadline, and they won’t be the only team from the Central division looking for scoring help.

The St. Louis Blues are in the market for a top-six forward, and the Dallas Stars could use the depth.

Source saying the Colorado Avalanche could have their eye out for a top-nine winger.

The Winnipeg Jets could use a veteran center that has some playoff experience.

The Minnesota Wild could use a top-nine forward but may hold on to their assets.

The Chicago Blackhawks might have their eye on future assets.

The Predators and Blues could be looking at likes of Max Pacioretty, Mike Hoffman, Rick Nash, Evander Kane, and Michael Grabner.

“In some cases, you like to get out ahead of it,” said Poile. “But do you pay a premium to do that? Or do you get a bargain by waiting for the last hour before the trade deadline?”
