NHL Rumors: Could the New York Rangers Be Sellers?
Host: “I’m happy that you went to the Rangers, because that was going to be my second question. I don’t even remember if Sean Campbell remembers bringing up Artemi Panarin’s name as somebody that may intrigue the Canadiens, and we did it a couple of months ago. It was, I’m not gonna say it was Sean’s hot take, but we were just throwing out names. But like, he’s got no more tenure left on this deal.
Zibanejad has what I’ve read is a very, very, no movement, no nothing clause. But also for Zibanejad, like, how much of the tail end of your career do you want to spend being, you know, a seller, dweller, or not near the playoffs?
So, one you think Zibanejad would waive that no-movement clause to go to a team that can compete and Panarin because of his contract situation, which he doesn’t have a contract going forward anymore. I believe, do the Rangers make him available to the masses?”
NHL Rumors: New York Rangers, and the Edmonton Oilers
Jim Biringer: “I mean, I think Panarin is a million-dollar question too, because I think they had some contract negotiations in the summer, but they really didn’t pick up. And he’s coming off an $11.7 million contract. They don’t want to pay him that again. They don’t want to go long-term. Do they try to find somewhere in the middle of the meet at this point? It doesn’t seem like he’s going to stay in New York.
And I think they have to decide, okay, if we’re not making the playoffs, if this tailspin continues, we have to go to him lightly and tread some water here, because he also has a no-movement close, and he could just say, Hey, I don’t want to go anywhere. And then we’re stuck in the same thing we saw with Toronto, with Mitch Marner, and he just walks for nothing.
And I don’t think the Rangers can do that, considering he was a prize to possession when they signed them, they accelerated the rebuild last time. They have to go to him and say, okay, things aren’t working out as well as we planned. Where would you like to go? What teams are on your list that you would be okay going to, similar to Zibanejad? Where do you want to go?
NHL Rumors: Will Artemi Panarin Headline July 1st 2026?
That one’s going to be a little bit trickier at the deadline. I think that one, if they’re going to do it, would have to wait for the off-season if they decide to do it. And if he decides that he doesn’t want to be a New York Ranger anymore, and all indications are right now, he still wants to be with the Rangers.
But I’m wondering about a guy like Vincent Trocheck. Like with the center market the way it is, he’s a prized possession. Teams would call about him if he became available, similar maybe to a guy, guy like Alexis Lafreniere might need a change of scenery.
So if the Rangers really fall out of this thing and they accept that they have to do the rebuild the right way this time around, instead of rushing through it, there could be a mass exodus out of New York.”
