On the Ottawa Senators and Mike Hoffman …
John Shannon: The Ottawa Senators statement on the Erik Karlsson and Mike Hoffman situation: “We are investigating this matter in cooperation with the NHL and will take whatever steps are necessary to protect the safety and privacy of our players and their families.”
Shawn Simpson: If allegations are true, can see why the Senators were in a rush to trade him. “Also doubt there will be any trade value, at any price. Waivers might be the only option.”
Andy Strickland: “What is Mike Hoffman’s trade value now with all this stuff going on? How bad do the #sens regret keeping him with this mess hanging over their head?”
Steve Simmons: An NHL GM on the Senators and Hoffman: “Now I know why they’ve had Hoffman on the block for a while.”
On the Detroit Red Wings and Mike Green …
Craig Custance of The Athletic: Right-handed Mike Green is the second-best pending unrestricted free agent defenseman behind Capitals John Carlson.
There is a chance the Green doesn’t even make it to the open market as the Red Wings have already made one- and two-year contract offers to him.
The Red Wings are in the middle of a rebuild and Green could get better options when free agency opens. The Wings and Green appear to be close on salary though, but maybe he could get a third year or more from another team.
“He might even get four,” said an NHL source.
At the trade deadline, Green would have waived his no-trade clause to go to the Capitals or Lightning. If the Capitals lose John Carlson, they could be interested in Green.
Vegas Golden Knights GM George McPhee has cap space, could be looking to add to his blue line, and drafted him while in Washington.
