The Senators getting calls to move or down in the draft
Wayne Scanlan of Sportsnet: The Ottawa Senators are armed with plenty of draft picks this year and over the next few years – 28 picks in the next three seasons. They have seven picks in the first three rounds this year.
The Senators also have salary cap space to work with, which makes them a team of interest for others who don’t.
“There have been multiple discussions, more about moving up than moving down, because we have pick 32 and 44,” Dorion said.
With the 19th pick, if they keep it, they’ll likely be looking for a forward or defenseman.
The Senators could look at adding some veteran leadership through trades or free agency.
Senators to meet with Ceci’s camp in Vancouver
Bruce Garrioch: The Ottawa Senators will hold more contract talks with the agent for Cody Ceci while in Vancouver this week.
GM Pierre Dorion said he hopes to get a deal done. Ceci will be a RFA with arbitration rights.
Is it time for the Senators to trade defenseman Cody Ceci?
Ken Warren of the Ottawa Citizen: It’s possible the Ottawa Senators defenseman Cody Ceci could be on the move.
GM Pierre Dorion said that he’s spoken with the agent for the restricted free agent about short- and long-term deals, but that he’s also looking at the trade market for him.
Ceci was drafted by the Senators seven year ago, 15th overall. The sides went through a nasty arbitration hearing last offseason.
On a long-term deal, he could be valued in the $4.5 to $5 million range.
Fellow defenseman Thomas Chabot could be looking at a long-term extension in the $7 million per season range.
Erik Brannstrom could make the jump this year, and Christian Jaros could be moving up the depth chart. Christian Wolanin brings some offense.
Also in the mix on the blue line include Dylan DeMelo, Mark Borowiecki, Max Lajoie and Ben Harpur.
The Olli Maatta trade from Pittsburgh to Chicago could be a comparable – forward Dominik Kahun and a fifth round pick.
Murray Pam: If the Senators end up trading defenseman Cody Ceci, could the Senators be interested in Calgary Flames defenseman T.J. Brodie? The Flames are looking to move out some salary so they can re-sign restricted free agents Sam Bennett, David Rittich and Matthew Tkachuk..
