Contract extension talks between the Wild and Spurgeon will start fresh
Michael Russo of The Athletic: The Minnesota Wild have been saying for a while now that one of their offseason priorities was to sign defenseman Jared Spurgeon to a contract extension. Before the GM Paul Fenton was fired in late July, there had been limited talks between the sides.
New GM Bill Guerin is trying to catch up on things, but he has said that it remains a “top priority.” Spurgeon recently met with Guerin and team owner Craig Leipold. Their meeting didn’t hold any serious contract talks, but a more of a getting-to-know lunch.
Guerin and Spurgeon’s agent have held preliminary talks. Talks will increase after Guerin gets more acclimatized with the organization. Agent Eustace King told Guerin there is no need to go over Fenton’s notes, and they’ll just start from scratch.
Talks will continue into the season if need be and he’ll let his agent handle it.
Spurgeon has a $5,5 million salary with a $5.187 million cap hit this season. Fenton was believed to looking at upwards of $6.8 million during their previous talks. Jacob Trouba‘s $8 million deal with the New York Rangers may move that AAV up.
Spurgeon will be 30-years old when his next contract kicks in, so Guerin will need to decide where in the five to eight years that he’s comfortable with.
