NHL Rumors: Penguins, Canucks, Senators and Canucks

Reports have that when the Pittsburgh Penguins hire a new GM, he'll be in charge of retooling the team. What if that doesn't work for this season? Could they blow things up?

Malkin and Letang unlikely to be traded

Pens Inside Scoop: Pittsburgh Penguins GM Jim Rutherford on trading forward Evgeni Malkin and defenseman Kris Letang: “I’m prepared to say it’s highly unlikely. My point was I’m open to accepting calls and having conversations about our players. I wasn’t aggressively active on trying to move those top guys.”

Canucks were ready to move back, possible deal on day two

Patrick Johnston: Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning said that if Vasili Podkolzin hadn’t been available at No. 10, they would have traded back in the first round. That kind of fits with the Colorado Avalanche rumors about the No. 16 pick.

Benning said that they are still looking at trades that could happen today.

Sportsnet 650: Benning on if they will be making moves today: “I want to be careful. We’re doing things the right way by developing players. I want to make sure if we add a piece it’s the right piece.”

Senators second-round picks drawing interest

Bruce Garrioch: The Ottawa Senators are getting a lot of interest in their second-round picks – No. 32 and No. 44 picks. Management when back to the hotel after the first-round to talk about potential scenarios for round two.

Hurricanes have a couple of defensemen available

Pierre LeBrun: Have been hearing that Carolina Hurricanes have been shopping defenseman Justin Faulk. Faulk’s camp and the Hurricanes met morning and contract extension talks didn’t go well.

Faulk has a year left on his deal at a $4.83 million cap hit, but $6 million in salary.

David Pagnotta: It is sounding like defensemen Dougie Hamilton and Justin Faulk are both in play – likely more Faulk than Hamilton.

Faulk is eligible to sign an extension after July 1st but have heard that talks haven’t gone well.

Cap Friendly: Faulk has a limited no-trade clause where he submits a 15-team trade list.

Hamilton doesn’t have a no-trade clause anymore because when the Hurricanes acquired him, they didn’t honor it.
