As of now, the Penguins won’t be looking externally to replace defenseman Justin Schultz

Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: The Pittsburgh Penguins have lost defenseman Justin Schultz for four months after he had surgery on his fractured lower left let. Penguins GM Jim Rutherford doesn’t plan on filling the hole externally.

“We’ll deal with it from within,” Rutherford told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Monday afternoon. “It won’t be any different than anything else.”

This doesn’t mean that things can’t change in the future if things don’t go as planned.

“If our team doesn’t play as well as we’d like, then we have to consider other options,” Rutherford said. “At this point in time, we have guys who certainly deserve that opportunity .”

Doughty Used Maple Leafs so Kings didn’t try to “screw” him

Cory Wilkins of theScore: The LA Kings were into Toronto yesterday. Drew Doughty signed an eight-year contract extension this past offseason for $88 million.

There was ‘speculation’ that he may have been interested in signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs if he was to hit the open market. Though he may have considered it an option, he seriously didn’t consider it.

He did say he may have used the Maple Leafs to his advantage.

“I was an L.A. Kings fan since I was a little kid, and I’ve always wanted to be here. I wanted to show my loyalty to the club and try to stay here forever,” Doughty told reporters, per Sportsnet. “I kind of always knew I was going to stay here, but I just said that (Leafs) stuff in the media just to kind of make sure (the Kings) didn’t try to screw me.”
