Philadelphia Flyers, their early success and now what?

Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post (mailbag):  A hot start has Philadelphia fans clamoring for more. Not many expect them to bottom out and if they did, then big changes would occur. It becomes more of a question about what the Flyers are looking for.

Most speculate defensemen and goaltending immediately but actually, it may just be general depth. The Metropolitan Division is a brutal division during the second half and injuries are inevitable.

Philadelphia does not want to clear up a ton of cap space. Center depth seems to be the biggest issue for this team and now maybe another winger as well. Nolan Patrick plays a role in this if he cannot return. That would necessitate maybe two trades potentially.

Some have suggested trading James van Riemsdyk. The problem is van Riemsdyk creates chances but is just not scoring. That has been his mantra since his first tour in Philadelphia. Points will come eventually. He is not going anywhere.

The Edmonton Oilers and Ken Holland making some loud noises?

Allan Mitchell of The Athletic:  There are five “loud noises” Ken Holland could make before the trade deadline.

Taylor Hall (New Jersey Devils for now) — Hall would be the biggest fish but may be more likely come July 1st, 2020. The left-winger would probably play on the second line in Edmonton and face easier competition. It’s not a bad idea but again, maybe in the summer.

Jean-Gabriel Pageau (Ottawa Senators) — Pageau is that center Edmonton needs. A pesky forward with more scoring touch than given credit for. The forward is also a great penalty killer. He is aggressive, creates turnovers, and would slot in on the third line with ease.

Chris Kreider (New York Rangers) — Kreider feels like the odd man out in New York. Maybe a trade could happen if the pot is sweetened. His size, speed, and scoring ability make him attractive.

Mike Hoffman (Florida Panthers) — Would Florida give him up now? Edmonton can always use a little more scoring help even on the man advantage.

Tyler Toffoli (Los Angeles Kings) — Toffoli priced reasonably low would be an easier get. Edmonton would have to clear space to make room for that $4.6 million salary.
