Quick hits from around the league
Dan Rosen of NHL.com: (mailbag) If the New York Islanders remain in the playoff hunt, could absolutely see them looking to add ahead of the trade deadline. They lost Kyle Palmieri for the season and defenseman Alexander Romanov for five to six months. They may get full LTIR relief for Palmieri. They should be active at the deadline.
The Columbus Blue Jackets recently signed Brendan Smith to play on their third pair to see if it works. They could decide to look elsewhere for a left handed D with some size and snarl. It makes sense for them to try and upgrade there.
Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: The New Jersey Devils are going to have to move out money if they want to bring in money. They’re looking to do something. No-trades and modified no-trades are making things harder.
Believe the Edmonton Oilers also looked at Buffalo Sabres Alex Lyon.
Several sources have said the Los Angeles Kings aren’t really looking to trade center Phillip Danault, as it’s not easy to find centers.
Anaheim Ducks center Ryan Strome has been in and out of the lineup, and if they don’t have a permanent spot, he could get some interest.
New York Islanders forward Maxim Tsyplakov has been fighting for ice and there are some teams poking around.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matias Maccelli hasn’t been a fit. Believe that there were some other teams who showed interest before he was dealt to Toronto. Maybe they’ll circle back.
It won’t happen until they get healthy, but some teams could circle back on Seattle Kraken forward Mason Marchment.
Sounds like some teams would rather ‘top-up’ the players payments if revenues are higher as opposed to raising the projected salary cap ceiling of $104 million next year.
Washington Capitals defenseman John Carlson when asked if he could retire after the season – “No chance.”
