Mark Spector of Sportsnet: Looking at the top remaining unrestricted free agents …
Jaromir Jagr – With Travis Zajac’s (center) long-term injury, maybe the New Jersey Devils will be interested in the 45-year old. Don’t see a fit for Jagr with a Canadian team and there is no chance for Vegas.
Jarome Iginla – Iginla can be useful on a power play, but with the fast pace of games, teams may be looking for that after mid-March and not for an entire season.
Thomas Vanek – Had 46 points last season but has played for six teams in the past four seasons. May not be a 20 goal scorer anymore, has defensive and character issues.
Roman Polak – His foot speed is slow, but can still do the dirty work. Should get a PTO deal.
Shane Doan – Not as quick as he once was and he may have to settle for a PTO.
Cody Franson – He’s 6′ 5″ and can kill penalties. There should be at least a one-year deal for the 30-year old.
Looking at the top remaining restricted free agents …
David Pastrnak – The Bruins would be smart to sign him to a long-term deal, but might have to a do a bridge deal if he wants Leon Draisaitl‘s $8.5 million per.
Sam Bennett – He’ll be looking for a short-term bridge deal, maybe two years and $5 million.
Bo Horvat – Though he was the Vancouver Canucks leading scorer with 52 points last season, he is a second-line center at best. If he’s looking for top-line money, may be better to sign him to a short-term deal.
Players who could be traded …
Matt Duchene – Although Colorado Avalanche GM Joe Sakic said he’ll be listening to offers, it seems unlikely that Sakic will trade Duchene anytime soon.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – Moving RHN’s $6 million contract will likely happen next offseason. The Edmonton Oilers will hope that he increases his trade value this season. It will be a surprise if he is traded during the season.
