The Hurricanes have held talks involving Kotkaniemi with the Los Angeles Kings and Phillip Danault, and included him in the offer to the Vancouver Canucks for Quinn Hughes.
The 25-year-old Kotkaniemi has four years left on his contract at a $4.82 million cap hit. The center market is getting thinner after Alexander Wennberg and Christian Dvorak signed extensions.
