NHL Rumors: Sharks, Panthers, and the Senators

On the San Jose Sharks …

Kevin Kurz: With the way Sharks backup Aaron Dell has been playing this season (1.72 GAA), have to wonder if there is a team this offseason would consider giving him a shot at being a No. 1.

Kevin Kurz: There were nine different teams scouting the Sharks-Wild game last night.

On the Florida Panthers …

Bob McKenzie: The Florida Panthers are looking for a backup goalie. Roberto Luongo‘s injury is part of the reason, but they’d also like a younger, experienced backup for Luongo for their longer-term transition.

On the Ottawa Senators …

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen: There was a Hockey Night in Canada report (Friedman and Kypreos) on Saturday that the Senators asked their ten players, including Erik Karlsson, for lists of teams they would/wouldn’t accept a trade too.

Senators players that have some form of a no-trade clause: Bobby Ryan, Nate Thompson, Mike Hoffman, Derick Brassard, Alex Burrows, Zack Smith, Dion Phaneuf and Johnny Oduya.

Karlsson might have been among the players asked back in September to provide a list. If/when asked, Karlsson has 48 hours to provide the list, and it’s good for the entire season.

A Karlsson trade seems highly improbable, but GM Pierre Dorion could keep all his options open.

Two sources have said that the Senators are not shopping Karlsson and he hasn’t been discussed.

Their plan with Karlsson seems to be the same for now, sit down with him on July 1st and see if they can sign him to a long-term contract extension. If they are far apart at that time, then they could consider trading him.

The trade value for Zack Smith isn’t high as he’s only scored once in the past 20 games.

Players that would bring the Senators the highest return would be Mike Hoffman, Jean-Gabriel Pageau, and Cody Ceci.
