Lightning looking to trade a defenseman

Joe Smith: Have been hearing that the Tampa Bay Lightning are open to the idea of moving defensemen Slater Koekkoek or Brayden Coburn and have been calling teams to see if there is any interest.

Leafs looking to move some players that would require waivers

Update: Chris Johnston: The Maple Leafs put Connor Carrick, Curtis McElhinney and Calvin Pickard on waivers.

Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: The Maple Leafs still have three potential backups in camp – Curtis McElhinney, Garret Sparks, and Calvin Pickard – and three defenseman vying for one spot – Connor Carrick, Justin Holl, and Martin Marincin.

Rosters are due on Tuesday and some will need to be put on waivers.

The Maple Leafs are believed to be looking to move some players as opposed to potentially losing them on waivers for nothing. Defenseman Carrick is believed to be one of the players they are looking to move.

The Washington Capitals may be looking to move some prospects

Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post: The Washington Capitals could be looking to move some of their prospects according to GM Brian MacLellan. 14 of their last 22 draft picks have been defensemen or goaltenders. They haven’t drafted a forward in the first round since 2014.

“I think we have more defense prospects than forward prospects,” General Manager Brian MacLellan said. “Yeah, I mean, we are looking at it. … At some point, we’re trying to exchange forward prospects for prospects, if the opportunity comes up.”

After this year, forwards Brett Connolly, Devante Smith-Pelly, and Nic Dowd will be unrestricted free agents, with Chandler Stephenson and Andre Burakovsky as restricted free agents.
