GM Shero on the Devils

Mike Morreale: New Jersey Devils GM Ray Shero on his teams slow start:

“I really want the team to give me a vote of confidence that I picked the right team so that’s what I want to see, and I know they’re capable of it.”

Hall on the Devils start and free agency

Mike Morreale: New Jersey Devils forward Taylor Hall on if the teams start to the season will have any bearing on his pending free agent status.

“I haven’t really thought about it. I’m just trying to help our team win. I don’t think I’m playing my greatest; I don’t think there’s anyone in this room who can say that they’re at the level they want to be at.”

Friedman on the Devils and Hall

“It would not surprise me if Edmonton was a big suitor here… ”

A Hall – Oilers reunion?

Jim Matheson: “For sure Oilers would love Hall back but not sure how they would make it work with their cap situation. Already have McDavid at $12.5mil, Draisaitl at $8.5 mil, Nugent-Hopkins at $6 mil…”

David Staple of the Edmonton Journal: Some thoughts a potential Taylor Hall reunion with the Edmonton Oilers after Friendman’s comments.

Hall’s trade value for the Devils is higher if he’s a long-term acquisition for a team as opposed to a rental. Would Hall be willing to sign an extension if traded?

The best-case scenario for the Devils, if they are looking at trading him, would be…

“a) the team willing to pay the most to New Jersey in trade,
b) the team with the most cap space so it can lavish a long-term, big money deal on Hall and
c) the team that Hall is willing to sign with right away.”

A comparable if Hall were to sign an extension with an acquiring team would be the Ottawa Senators trading Mark Stone to the Vegas Golden Knights last season. The Senators received Erik Brannstrom, Oscar Lindberg and a second-round pick, with Stone signing an extension a week later.

Hall could be looking for $10 to $11 million a season, so a team will have to have the cap space to re-sign him. It’s hard to see the Oilers being able to fit that in given what they currently have on the books.

It’s also hard to see the Oilers wanting to give up an Evan Bouchard or Philip Broberg, a defenseman like Adam Larsson or Kris Russell, and a draft pick for Hall.

The best route for the Oilers might be to see if they could sign him on July 1st if it becomes an option.
