NHL Rumors: The Los Angeles Kings, and the Calgary Flames

It wouldn’t be easy for the LA Kings to move Jonathan Quick

Lisa Dillman and Josh Cooper of The Athletic: Through two games Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Quick has a 7.17 goals-against average and a .750 save percentage.

Given Quick’s injury history, moving his $5.8 million salary cap hit for another three years would never have been easier. His slow start makes it even harder.

NBC analyst Keith Jones:

“If there’s another team out there that believes they have a goalie coach that might be able to get him back to where he’s performed at previously, maybe they see something that a trained eye can pick up that they think they can adjust and get him back,” Jones said.

“That’s still not out of the realm of possibility. In the NHL today, there are so many specialty coaches that there may be a guy out there that’s confident enough that he can get Jonathan Quick back to being the elite goaltender he was in the past.”

To clear some salary cap space the Calgary Flames could move…

Kent Wilson of The Athletic: The Calgary Flames are carrying only 22 roster players with about $155,000 in salary cap space (at the time of writing). If things stay constant, that would give them just over $700,000 in accrued cap space at the trade deadline.

The Flames could look at moving a player out either by trade or demotion.  Mark Jankowski and Austin Czarnik could be options. Jankowski carries a $1.675 million salary cap hit and Czarnik comes in at $1.25 million.

Jankowski and Czarnik could be replaced by Alan Quine ($735,000) or Dillon Dube ($778,000).

Given Jankowski’s age and toolset, Jankowski could draw more interest on the trade market and Czarnik would.
