If Marner is going to want a big number, he’s going to have to go eight years
@Prospects_Watch: Elliotte Friedman said on Sportsnet 590 that the Toronto Maple Leafs have told Mitch Marner that if he wants a big number – $11 million AAV – it is going to have to be for eight years. Marner’s camp is not ready to do that.
@Account4Hockey: Friedman on Sportsnet 590 believes that they will ask teams for Marner trade packages even though they don’t want to trade him.
@Prospects_Watch: Darren Dreger on TSN 1050 said that the Maple Leafs will need to start at, at least $10.5 million to get contract talks going with Mitch Marner’s camp.
@Account4hockey: Nick Kypreos on Sportsnet 590 said that after the Erik Karlsson and Jeff Skinner deals, Mitch Marner will only take $11 million plus. There is no progress being made.
Marner’s camp feels there will be an offer sheet. The Leafs will make an offer before or at the draft one last time and then call the bluff on the offer sheet.
Kristen Shilton: Bob McKenzie on TSN 1050 on Marner: “If Mikko Rantanen signed tomorrow for $9 million, you know what Mitch Marner is going to say about that? Who cares? That’s not my comparable; I choose my comparable. My comparable is Auston Matthews. So pay me. If you don’t pay me, I’m not showing up to camp”
Maple Leafs Hot Stove: Darren Dreger on TSN 1050 on the Mitch Marner situation.
“There are ongoing discussions with Marner, Ferris and Dubas, but not negotiations. They have done a nice job of keeping it amicable and I don’t think that is going to change. I suspect that is the same with Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson. That is what the manager has to do — keep those lines of communication open.”
DragLikePull: “The more I think about it, the less a Marner trade makes sense to me. I have a hard time seeing there being a team that’s willing to give Marner the same contract as Matthews *and* give the Leafs major assets to make it happen. That’s too much to give up.”
