Maple Leafs shopping Carrick
David Pagnotta: Have been hearing that the Maple Leafs are actively shopping defenseman Connor Carrick who doesn’t appear to be in their top-six plans. There have been some talks so far.
Talks with Matthews and Marner are ongoing
Kevin McGran of the Toronto Star: Contract talks between Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas and reps of Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner are ongoing. There are some that believe Matthews could be looking for upwards of $13 million, with Marner possibly commanding $10 million.
“Those discussions with their representatives are ongoing,” Dubas said. “I know everybody would like everything to happen quickly, but there’s a process we go through. Would we like to have had it all sorted out and done on the first day? Yes, but I don’t think that’s realistic.”
A Marner extension may have to wait until after the season if they can’t reach a deal by next week
Maple Leafs Hot Stove: Darren Ferris, the agent for Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner was on TSN 1050 talking about Marner’s contract situation.
“In our case, it’s just time. We’ve had some discussions. We’ve had some very productive discussions so far. If nothing is done by the start of the season, then we’ll wait until next summer and we’ll get back at it again. I’m sure Kyle will be of the same opinion and so will the whole Leafs organization. They understand they have time and so do we. There is no pressing issue for Mitch to sign right now. I guess the order of the day is really for them to address what is pressing for them at this time.”
Ferris hasn’t told the Maple Leafs, but his preference is that if Marner doesn’t have a contract extension in place by the start of season, to then wait until the after the season.
“If things can be worked out, then it’s great. You get a deal done. But there is time. There is still another year to go. I’m sure, as much as they’d like to get it done now, if it’s not the right deal, then we’ll have to wait. That, as you said, is not unusual.”
