Chris Johnston: The Toronto Maple Leafs have told at least two teams that James van Riemsdyk won’t be made available before the trade deadline.
There have been no serious contract negotiations between the Maple Leafs and pending UFA winger van Riemsdyk. The same can be said for the Leafs other pending UFAs in Tyler Bozak and Leo Komarov.
Nick Kypreos: There haven’t been contract talks as van Riemsdyk isn’t interested in giving the Maple Leafs a hometown discount.
“He knows what the market is for goal scorers,” Kypreos said. “He knows what the price is out there for a guy like Max Pacioretty. He’s going to be in a position to say, ‘If you want me to bring the down, you’re going to have to go deep in term.’
“I don’t think the Leafs are prepared to do what Washington did for T.J. Oshie, who had to go eight years. I think it’s inevitable that the Leafs may just be looking at renting their own player.”
Sportsnet: Teams are interested in Ottawa Senators center Derick Brassard and Montreal Canadiens center Tomas Plekanec.
Elliott Friedman: The Senators may be concerned what they’d look like with Brassard at center. Believe that the Sens do have “some real action on him.”
Nick Kypreos: The Pittsburgh Penguins and San Jose Sharks have shown some interest in Plekanec.
Elliott Friedman: The Canadiens could try to re-sign Plekanec.
Sportsnet: Nick Kypreos: The Nashville Predators are interested in Rangers forward Rick Nash and could also be interested in Detroit Red Wings defenseman Mike Green.
The Dallas Stars have also shown significant interest in Nash.
Sportsnet: Elliott Friedman: The Coyotes are seeing if there is any trade interest in forward Max Domi.
“I don’t think it’s necessarily a trade where they’re looking to dump him or unload him or get rid of him,” Friedman said during Saturday’s Headlines segment on Hockey Night in Canada. “I just think they are looking around to maybe see if there is someone who feels a fresh start will help him.”
