The Toronto Maple Leafs awaiting news on Chris Tanev, and Andrew Mangiapane unlikely for the Leafs
Sportsnet: Elliotte Friedman on 32 Thoughts: The Podcast – Matthew Schaefer’s Impact On Long Island episode, on the Toronto Maple Leafs and dealing with Chris Tanev‘s injury. Doesn’t seem like the Maple Leafs would be a landing spot for Andrew Mangiapane.

Friedman: “So that’s what I kind of heard with (Andrew Mangiapane). You know, I did have some people who said to me that they kind of wondered if Toronto might do it. Like maybe a (Matias) Maccelli kind of move. But I don’t think Toronto is going to do that. Obviously, I think some people say that because Treliving obviously had Mangiapane in Calgary. I don’t think that’s the case. But I do think they’re going to find a landing spot for him. I just, again, I just don’t know the timeline.
And you know, Toronto will be interesting now, because, you know, I mentioned that, I think Tanev is going to be out a while. I think they’re going to know better this week, and we’ll see what Toronto decides to do here. Do they, do they go and say, ‘All right, we’re sticking with what we got,’ or they go out there and look for another defenseman?”
Kyle Bukauskas: “Yeah, because that’s, man, a big hurdle to overcome if he’s missing any more time. You can tell right away, just having him back, how that helped move everything into place, understandably. And now, if you’re looking at an extended absence, that’s a tough one.”
Friedman: “The other thing, too, with Tanev is he’s over last year’s league average salary, which was $3.8 million. You know he’s at four and a half. So, in order to get his full cap space, you have to declare him out.”
NHL Rumors: Edmonton Oilers and Andrew Mangiapane – Ducks and Maple Leafs
Bukauskas: “Right.”
Friedman: “And I just don’t know at this point in time that he’s going to be in a position where you can declare him all the way out. Like Tyler Seguin, Dallas hasn’t done it yet, and they probably won’t do it until right before the trade deadline after the Olympics, because I think Seguin wants to play this year.
So you can’t, if that’s the case, and there’s a chance he can, you can’t use his full cap hit. So that’s one of the things some of these teams have to kind of dance around. Like one of the guys who’s definitely like, Alex Pietrangelo, he’s out. The Golden Knights know, they can use the full cap hit. But (Aleksander) Barkov isn’t like that. Seguin isn’t like that. Can always change, but right now, it’s not there.”
