The Vegas Golden Knights may need to move salary out … McPhee hopes to have Karlsson signed soon

Maple Leafs Hot Stove: Elliotte Friedman was on Sportsnet 960 talking about the Vegas Golden Knights, their salary cap situation and desire to make some trades.

“I think they’ve looked at Clarkson’s deal which has one more year in it, but you’d really have to throw a sweetener in there to get that to work. I don’t think that’s going to work. One of the teams that could’ve done that was Ottawa, but I’ve heard they’re not interested.

I definitely think Colin Miller is very high on the list to be dealt this offseason. I think there are people who value him better than the Golden Knights did. I think they’ve tried to move Clarkson; I don’t know if they will be successful, but the name we hear the most is Colin Miller.”

Jesse Granger of The Athletic: Golden Knights forward William Karlsson didn’t have the same season last year as he did in 2017-18, but it was still a productive one.

Karlsson is a pending RFA with arbitration rights.

“We just have more data to work with, and we are pretty clear on what kind of player he is,” McPhee said when the season ended. “We will get to work on it shortly and hopefully get it wrapped up.”

An extension could be in the $6 to $7.5 million range. Term would help determine what number they end up at – a longer term the lower the cap hit.

Would an eight-year deal come in around $6 million? A three- or four-year deal may end up around $7.5 million.

“Well it’s nice to just have a long-term (contract),” Karlsson said. “To not have to deal with these kinds of questions after every year. I mean, this is where I want to be. Ever since I got here, I’ve been very happy both on and off the ice. I see this team has a great chance of winning in the future. This is definitely where I want to be and be a part of.”
