NHL Rumors V: Sabres Buying Out Ehrhoff, Kings, Coyotes and Leafs

  • John Vogl of the Buffalo News: The Buffalo Sabres will be buying out defenseman Christian Ehrhoff. Ehrhoff has declined the waiver process. The fear of the cap recapture penalty made him virtually untradable.

“Since I got here we’ve talked about this,” Murray, who was hired in January, told The News this morning in Buffalo Niagara International Airport. “We’ve talked about his contract. We’ve talked about the repercussions of the contract with the penalties that the league has put on it. It’s been an ongoing discussion.”

Ehrhoff was also not interested in being in Buffalo during their rebuild.

“The fact that he quite frankly doesn’t want to be here makes it easy,” Murray told The News. “I’ve said at the start that if you don’t want to be here we’ll make it happen. He’s made I believe $22 million in three years and feels that we’re not going in the right direction, but he really hasn’t had much part in the direction the team has gone. So time to move on.”

The Sabres currently sit just about $20.6 million under the salary cap floor. They have Tyler Ennis and Marcus Foligno.

  • Robert Paredes: The Kings would be able to afford Christian Ehrhoff if they dumped Robyn Regehr.
  • Sarah McLellan: Eight teams have called on Coyotes pending UFA Thomas Greiss, still in talks with a few.
  • James Mirtle: The Maple Leafs have kicked tires on at least six UFAs so far including: Milan Michalek and Martin Brodeur.
  • Jeremy Rutherford: Without the Ducks and Predators in on Jason Spezza, price for him would seemingly be shrinking.
  • John Vogl: Sabres GM Tim Murray on signing 2014 1st round pick Sam Reinhart: “They’re going to ask for a lot. I’m going to think it’s too much, and they’re going to get it.”
