Salary Cap will play a big role in any Washington Capitals offseason decisions
Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post: The Washington Capitals will have a $1.15 million bonus overage penalty tacked on to their salary cap for next season.
Jakub Vrana and his career-high 24 goals require a new contract. GM Brian MacLellan said they are interested in a long-term deal for Vrana. Vegas Golden Knights Alex Tuch could be a comparable – seven years at $33.25 million, a $4.75 million cap hit. Vrana could ask for more, or for a bridge deal.
The Capitals could look to re-sign Chandler Stephenson if they could get him on an inexpensive deal.
Andre Burakovsky was in the rumor mill this season but finished the strong. He’s owned a $3.25 million qualifying offer to retain his right or he’d become a UFA. That price might be too much for the Capitals. They could not qualify him and hope to re-sign him to a lower cap hit on an extension before the start of free agency.
Pending UFAs Brooks Orpik and Devante Smith-Pelly are unlikely to be back.
The Capitals may want to re-sign Brett Connolly and Carl Hagelin, but they may not be able to afford both.
Defenseman Matt Niskanen has two years left at a $5.75 million cap hit and could be made available to help clear some cap space.
Will P.K. Subban be a part of the Nashville Predators changes this offseason
Paul Skrbina of the Nashville Tennessean: Nashville Predators defenseman P.K. Subban has three years left on his deal at a $9 million salary cap hit. There will likely be Subban trade rumors this offseason.
Predators GM David Poile said that there will be some changes coming to the Predators and P.K. Subban understands the business side of things.
“If I’m talking facts, I’m the highest paid player on the this team,” he said Wednesday. “With that comes responsibility. Just like everybody else, the responsibility is on me to take the fact that we didn’t win the first round; we didn’t accomplish what we wanted to accomplish.
“I hope I’m part of the solution. I hope I can be here and be a part of that. But at the same token, I’m prepared to understand that this organization deserves and demands the best, and they should.”
Subban missed 19 games this season and had a career low with 31 points. He said the injury he dealt with this season isn’t a long-term issue.
