Can the Jets and Trouba agree on a new contract before their arbitration the week?

Ken Wiebe of the Winnipeg Sun: The Winnipeg Jets and Jacob Trouba have an arbitration hearing set for this Friday.

Trouba is basically playing top minutes for the Jets, and will be looking to be paid if they can agree on a new deal. The Jets will have some cap concerns as Patrik Laine and Blake Wheeler will need new deals after this season.

There have been open talks between the Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff and agent Kurt Overhardt all last season. What each side is hoping for – money and term – is not known.

The Jets could use Seth Jones‘ six-year, $5.4 million per as a comparable or Colton Parayko‘s five-year, $5.5 million per.

Would a six-year, $6 million deal be enough for Trouba?

Capitals still working on a deal for Tom Wilson …

Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post: Washington Capitals GM Brian MacLellan‘s next main priority is to get forward Tom Wilson signed to a contract extension. Mark Guy, Wilson’s agent that they aren’t “done or close” to having it completed.

“It’s a big priority,” MacLellan said. “Tom’s a big part of our team, a big part of what we got going and our playoff success. So, he’s No. 1 right now.”

The sides continue to talk and Guy has said that they talked term at over four years.

“We’ll see what his representatives want to do,” MacLellan said two weeks ago. “I’d prefer to keep him around for as long as we can.”

Wilson didn’t file for salary arbitration. Some insiders put him at between $3.5 and $4.5 million a season.

The Capitals have about $8.2 million in cap space with 20 roster players. Defenseman Madison Bowey also needs a contract.

GM MacLellan has said they may look to add a third-pairing veteran defenseman. They haven’t ruled bring Brooks Orpik back.
