Daily Faceoff: Who has the leverage when it comes to the New York Rangers trading Artemi Panarin? Will the return for Panarin feel underwhelming?
Jonny Lazarus: “I just feel like, no matter what, though, the return is underwhelming. What Artemi Panarin gave the Rangers over the last seven seasons, the Rangers are not getting in this trade.”
Mike Rupp: “But hey, but I would say the same thing. Here’s the same thing, and maybe where there’s a little bit more leverage, because Quinn Hughes had another year, but Quinn, that situation had Vancouver in a really bad spot. Where you would think Vancouver had no leverage, they did pretty well on their return.”
Arthur Staple: “The leverage, for sure, is whoever gets him is getting the best guy available. So I think if you’re Dallas or you’re Colorado, just to name two, and you say, ‘Artemi Panarin at $5.8 (million) for the rest of the season, is the guy that we believe will put us over the top to win a Stanley Cup.’ He’ll give up what you need to give up.

You know, Colorado, I think with Brock Nelson, you look at that deal last year, you know, there were some situations, but Brock Nelson turned down a deal to Winnipeg. He didn’t want to go there, even for the short term. So he accepted a deal to Colorado.
Lou Lamoriello put a line in the sand, said, ‘We’re only doing this deal if we get a first and a prospect that we like.’ They got what they wanted, and it really wasn’t a huge bidding war either, for that situation.
