NHL Trade: NY Islanders Trade Travis Hamonic To The Calgary Flames

The New York Islanders have traded defenseman Travis Hamonic and a 2019 or 2020 4th round pick to the Calgary Flames for a 2018 1st round pick, 2018 2nd round pick and a 2019 or 2020 2nd round pick.

Bob McKenzie: “That’s because there’s a pre-existing deal in place with ARI, that if CGY makes playoffs in 2019, ARI gets CGY’s 2nd rounder.”

Bob McKenzie: “If CGY sends NYI a 2nd in 2019, the 4th the Flames get back is also in 2019. If CGY sends 2nd in 2020, the 4th rder they get back is 2020.”

The 26-year old Hamonic was drafted 53rd overall in the second round of the 2008 draft by the Islanders.

Hamonic carries a $3.857 salary cap hit for three more years.

Some thoughts from the media …

Cap Friendly: “With the #Flames trading for Hamonic, they now have roughly $15,717,457 in projected cap space moving forward with 15 players.”

Andy Graziano: “Have to wait and see what Snow does with picks, could have needed them to complete another deal. If not, tough trade in short term.”

Andy Graziano: “That said, a huge thank you and best wishes to Travis Hamonic, one of the truly great guys in the sport. Always a pleasure to speak with.”

Andy Graziano: “Also leads me to believe what others have been tossing around, if Hamonic’s trade request was ever really rescinded.”

Andy Graziano: “In terms of a potential flip, can’t see Snow moving 3 and 44, hard to see at present what other assets would be included in another deal.”

Andy Graziano: “Hard to count on weak UFA market. Last I looked this morning, Hanzal, Gagner and Bonino out there and none worth throwing tons of $$ at.”

Dan Rosen: “Calgary’s top 4 D now is lefties Mark Giordano and TJ Brodie, righties Dougie Hamilton and Travis Hamonic. That’s pretty darn formidable.”

Pierre LeBrun: “That deal was heavy lifting for Flames GM Brad Treliving. He’s been grinding away at it… That top 4 for Calgary looks mighty good”

Pierre LeBrun: “Having said that, real nice haul of assets for Isles GM Garth Snow in return. He played the strong trade interest in Hamonic well.”

Isabelle Khurshudyan: “This is a good move for the Isles. Have a solid pipeline of blue-liners to replace Hamonic and now clear some more cap room.”

Dan Rosen: “Trading Hamonic means NYI are trading a big piece off of their D. I wonder if it’s part of a bigger play. It doesn’t make them better now.”

Adam Gretz: “Unless the Islanders are going to turn around and flip a bunch of those picks for something else … I am not sure I get it.”
