The Minnesota Wild have traded forward Charlie Coyle to the Boston Bruins for Ryan Donato and a conditional 2019 5th round pick – becomes a fourth (NYR) if the Bruins make it to the second round.
The 26-year old Coyle was drafted 28th overall in the first round of the 2010 draft by the San Jose Sharks. He carries a $3.2 million cap hit through next season.
The 22-year old Donato was drafted 56th overall in the second round of the 2014 draft by the Bruins. He carries a $900,000 cap hit and a pending RFA.
Michael Russo: “Not sure why, but chance #mnwild #bruins trade won’t be officially announced til around 10 p.m. Maybe because of the Wild’s flight delay”
Some thoughts from the media
Amalie Benjamin: “Honestly, not sure how I feel about the Bruins punting on Donato for a very up-and-down player in Coyle. Not sure this deal fixes their main issue for this season, which is a lack of depth scoring.”
Chad Graff: “Cool opportunity for Charlie Coyle who heads home. Coyle grew up just south of Boston. He’s got a year remaining on his contract.”
Greg Wyshynski: “I’m intrigued by what Coyle could do with Krejci, in the sense that he could produce beyond his (rather budget) AAV. Selling on Donato at 22 tells you what the Bruins think of him, but it’s not like they haven’t been wrong before on a youngin’.”
Conor Ryan: “Have to wonder if Bruins viewed Ryan Donato in the same light as someone like Frank Vatrano (great shot, plenty of other areas to work on).
Of course, Vatrano is now up to 20 goals and 33 points this season in Florida.”
Jimmy Murphy: “Been saying all season they were shopping Donato. Sad to see him go but he just wasn’t gonna get out of Cassidy doghouse”
Marisa Ingemi: “Ryan Donato? He has the potential. He’s really young and has already scored some good NHL goals. It’s what his skillset is. That’s the risk with giving up on him.”
Nicholas Goss: “Overpay. Coyle is not going to add a whole lot of offense to the mix.”
Chris Wassel: “Short term win for Boston. Long term all depends on Donato development. Win for both teams really”
Pete Blackburn: “Certainly wasn’t opposed to dealing Donato but was hoping he’d fetch more than Coyle. Product of selling Donato low & Coyle being signed through next season at a good AAV, I guess. I’m nervous that Donato rebounds and makes the deal look bad, but the team gave up on him quick”
Puck Pedia: “Coyle: 26 RC, Year 4/5 $3.2M Cap Hit then UFA. 10G, 28P in 60GP.
Donato: 22 CR, Yr 2/2 $900K Cap Hit then RFA. 2014 Rnd 2 Pick. 9P in 34 NHL GP, to AHL Jan 28”
Charlie Coyle fills a real need in Boston and this makes them a much stronger playoff opponent. pic.twitter.com/Vwapvfqula

It appears Charlie Coyle is headed to the #NHLBruins. At 6’3, 220 pounds, Coyle wins a high percentage and volume of the puck battles he engages in and has put up above average high-danger shot differentials this season in Minnesota. pic.twitter.com/g5wk4jWbGJ
