NHL Trade: The Maple Leafs Trade Josh Leivo To The Vancouver Canucks
The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Josh Leivo to the Vancouver Canucks.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Josh Leivo to the Vancouver Canucks for Michael Carcone.

The 25-year old Leivo was drafted 86th overall in the round of the 2011 draft by the Maple Leafs. He carries a $925,000 salary cap hit.

The 22-year old Carcone was undrafted. He carries a $675,000 salary cap hit.

Thoughts from the media

Bob McKenzie: “TOR promised Leivo when signed that if he were to fall out of lineup with limited opportunity to get back in, they would move him to a more favourable situation”

Cap Friendly: “Josh Leivo is on a 1 year deal that carries a $925,000 AAV. If qualified by Van, he’ll be an RFA with arbitration rights this summer. Michael Carcone is in the final year of his ELC which carries an AAV of $675,000. Carcone is waiver exempt for the remainder of this season.”

Justin Bourne: “Nice pick-up for the Canucks, definitely bought low on Leivo. I don’t really understand the return, unless the Marlies figure they need AHL help (which is possible – they like their AHL team to be good so their prospects play in big playoff games).”

Justin Bourne: “More I think about it, that’s it. Someone had to move, probably wanted to give Leivo a legit chance to play somewhere for being the good soldier, might as well make AHL team better – not gonna get much more for JL.”

Gus Katsaros: “I didn’t do a write up for Leivo this year for the Mckeen’s Yearbook…. good shot. Improved defensive structure (on a Leafs team that isn’t exactly a defensive stalwart). If he gets caught with a technical coach I’d bet he’s out of the lineup for prolonged periods.”

Patrick Johnston: “Kind of trade you should be making. Leivo an intriguing player, worth a look. Carcone havibg a solid year in Utica but he was the first cut in camp so was way down Canucks’ depth chart.”

Ryan Wagman: “Carcone is a decent AHL player, but a little underwhelming a return for a player who will line up in Vancouver’s top 9.”

Scott Wheeler: “Michael Carcone is a decent AHL forward with doubtful NHL upside. This is the Leafs trying to get something out of a waiver move that would have generated nothing. Not a great outcome for Leafs or Leivo but writing has been on the wall and they had to lose someone for Nylander.”

Anthony Petrielli: “Wrote today that Ennis has the inside edge on Leivo for the final spot in the starting 12 forwards because he can actually play LW, but getting rid of Leivo to keep Martin Marincin and Justin Holl is poor asset management.”

Scott Wheeler: “The Leafs believe in Holl and Gauthier by the sounds of it.”

J.D. Burke: “When and I ranked the Top 20 prospects for , Carcone just barely missed the cut. He’s an honourable mention though”

Jason Botchford: “I’d put leivo with horvat tomorrow and immediately believe he’s one of the best wingers horvat has played with in five weeks
