The Toronto Maple Leafs have traded forward Patrick Marleau, 2020 conditional 1st round pick (Top 10 protected in 2020, if not used, unprotected in 2021), and a 2020 7th round pick for a 2020 6th round pick.

The Maple Leafs are able to remove Marleau’s $6.25 million salary cap hit as they didn’t retain any salary.

Hi, Patrick here. I don’t have my own social media, so I wanted to come here and say a few words to @MapleLeafs, their fans and also to @Marner93 and @AM34 pic.twitter.com/6Te4oePdLa

Thoughts from the media

Pierre LeBrun: “Hurricanes will try to convince Marleau to play for them but if the answer is No they will buy him out and make him UFA.”

Chris Johnston: “Patrick Marleau waives his NMC for trade to Carolina and will be bought out by #hurricanes. He’d like to return to San Jose in free agency.”

Michael Smith: “The wild card in the trade is Patrick Marleau, who has a year remaining on a three-year contract and a $6.25 million cap hit. Reports are that he desires to be back out west. A buy out (or maybe a trade) could be an option for the #Canes.”

Kevin Kurz: “I understand why Marleau would want to come back to San Jose. But Wilson has so much on his plate right now, I can’t see him making any commitment until the dust settles with free agency”

Shawn Simpson: “Leafs give up a 2020 first to make a bad signing in Marleau go away. That’s an asset a Cup contender wants at next years deadline. For a team that hasn’t done anything in the playoffs, they feel headed in the wrong direction. Even more if Gardiner walks and they can’t replace.”

Brian Lawton: Next question do the @SanJoseSharks welcome Marleau back with open arms or is @LAKings and old coach a possible landing spot”

The Carolina #Hurricanes plan to buyout Marleau as per @reporterchris

Because Marleau’s contract is a 35+ contract, there will be no cap hit relief and his $6.25M cap hit will remain counting against the club. This will however free up a roster spot.https://t.co/LeixgMQSEM pic.twitter.com/ay5JO60J3V
