The Winnipeg Jets have acquired center Paul Stastny from the St. Louis Blues for a conditional 2018 first-round pick, conditional 2020 fourth-round pick and forward Erik Foley.

The Blues are retaining 50 percent of Stastny’s salary.

Andy Strickland: “The conditions are…#stlblues don’t get 4th if they sign Foley. Winnipeg keeps 1st if they unexpectedly fall into a top three pick in the first round.”

Thoughts from the media …

Jeremy Rutherford: “Stastny deal was something that came together in the last 24 hours. This was not the team’s plan prior to the losing streak, which reached six games on Sunday. Stastny had to waive his no-trade clause, but liked Jets because he played with Wheeler during the lockout.”

Pierre LeBrun: “Some background: Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff tried very hard to sign Paul Stastny back in the summer of 2014 when he was UFA and signed with St. Louis”

Mike Kelly: “Stastny to Jets. Winnipeg is one of the best teams in the league moving pucks into the middle of the ice – Stastny excels in that area – precision passer. Jets now have 5 forwards in the top 60 in pass to slot completion %; Stastny is top 30. Easy to argue now best top 9 in NHL.”

Dan Rosen: “The Blues have lost six in a row and I remember rumblings a few weeks ago, before the losing streak, that Doug Armstrong didn’t think his team was a player or two away from being Cup contenders. Re-tool has started. Stastny to the Jets. He can be UFA after the season.”

Ken Wiebe: “HC Paul Maurice says Paul Stastny is expected to be part of both the PP and PK, a prime example of his versatility. Maurice wouldn’t commit to who his linemates are going to be, but I would say it’s a good bet he will be with Nikolaj Ehlers and Patrik Laine”

Darren Dreger: “Cheveldayoff with a big add for the Jets. He’s been working on deal for awhile. Statsny had to waive to accept trade.”
