Flyers and Simmonds have held some extension talks, but not much to report
Tom Dougherty of NBC Sports Philadelphia: Forward Wayne Simmonds is entering the final year of his deal. Simmonds will turn 30-years old this weekend, and GM Ron Hextall has said several times he hopes they can reach an extension.
“I think they’ve had preliminary talks,” Simmonds told reporters in Toronto, “but it is what it is at this point. I got to get healthy first and foremost and show that I am the player that I was two years ago.
“For being injured, I didn’t have a bad season last year, but it’s still not to the best of my ability. So when we continue to talk, we continue to talk. It is what it is right now.”
Hextall doesn’t have a history of re-signing players during the season.
Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post: (GM Ron Hextall Q&A) GM Ron Hextall when asked where things sit with Wayne Simmonds.
“Well, there’s no update. There’s really nothing to talk about for me to talk about publicly. The sentiments are the same. We like Simmer and we’d like to keep him, but I don’t have anything new to report.”
When asked if he’s still looking for someone that may be able to help out on the penalty kill or are they good with what they already have?
“I’m open to it, but it would probably be more of a lateral move on the market rather than a free agent. It would be a forward. We’d like to add a penalty-killing forward but to this point there’s been nothing there that’s made enough sense for us to move.”
Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post: (mailbag) The Flyers had looked at some potential players on PTOs but it’s sounding like they are opting against it.
