- Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe: If the Bruins and Jets are talking about a Dustin Byfuglien trade, they wouldn’t be talking about including one of the Bruins better trade chips – Malcolm Subban. The Jets already have a couple potential long-term options in net. The Jets would want one of the Bruins two first round picks and help off the roster.
- Amalie Benjamin of the Boston Globe: The Kings are believed to be interested in signing Milan Lucic to a contract extension, but he may need to show that he can still play like the 2010-11 Lucic where he scored 30 goals.
“Another thing that I have to learn how to deal with, too, is that little bit of uncertainty,” he said. I’ve always known that, ‘Hey, OK, I’m going to be here and the contract is there,’ so none of that was ever in the back of your mind, right? So I guess there is a little bit of uncertainty there, as well.
“Usually when the team has success, individuals have success, so I’m just trying to come here and help the team win hockey games, and usually when you do that everything else takes care of itself.”
- Sam Carchidi of the Philadelphia Inquirer: Flyers GM Ron Hextall is attempting to trade Vincent Lecavalier, R.J. Umberger and Luke Schenn. Hextall said that talks have been quiet, but should start to pick up as teams start to make their final cuts and start addressing their needs.
- Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area: Kurz wonders if the Sharks look to dangle one of their young forwards for some help on the blueline if they can’t find a sixth defenseman from within, or if someone gets injured.
- Rich Chere of NJ.com: Talk is that the Devils may have a trade offer on the table that would send Travis Zajac to the Maple Leafs. Leafs GM Lou Lamoriello is thought to be talking with Ray Shero about potential trades. Leafs Nazem Kadri could be one potential players involved. The Devils would consider a package deal if they could get James van Riemsdyk. Zajac has five years left on his deal at a cap hit of $5.75 million and he has a no-trade clause.
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: (chat) On how Steven Stamkos’ extension could affect the Stars.
It’s a long ways away, but if Seguin’s contract were up this offseason, would he get north of $10M AAV? I think they are more worried about how Stamkos will affect Jamie Benn. The cap’s growth could be slowed by the problems with the Canadian dollar, so I’m not sure if the Stars can have a team where two players each make $10 million a year. It will be a drama worth studying in the future. On the good side, Patrick Sharp and Jason Spezza come off the books at just the right time to keep both Benn and Seguin happy, so Jim Nill is already thinking about those contracts.
