Rumors: Flames, Kings, and Coyotes

On the Flames …

  • Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun: Flames GM Brad Treliving was on TSN 1200 radio yesterday and cautioned that making trades isn’t always the answer.

“Going out and just saying, ‘Ok, you’re going to trade your way out of slumps or trade your way out of issues,’ it’s just not realistic,” Treliving said. “We’re not out there trying to blow up our team and do all these sorts of things. At the end of the day, we’ve got a really good group here. We’ve just got to get everybody to play better, more consistently, longer. And that’s the challenge here for us right now.”

  • Kristen Odland: Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman: “If we start winning some games, I’m sure those rumours will go away.” Wideman has a no-trade clause and hasn’t heard anything from the Flames as of yet.

On the Kings. There has been talk of the Kings looking for a defenseman or two …

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Kings have turned things around and have won five straight, thanks in part to finding stability on their blueline.

“I think what you do if you solidify that top four, led by Drew, and now it’s kind of calmed down that back end,” said Kings assistant general manager and Hall of Famer Rob Blake on Tuesday.

“In the first three games I think we were kind of searching for the pairs. But I think it’s kind of worked itself out now.”

On the Coyotes …

  • Pierre LeBrun of ESPN: The Coyotes may end up moving from Glendale at some point, potentially down the road. Phoenix mayor has been saying he wants to have a downtown arena with the Sun and Coyotes occupying it. A Native American tribe has expressed interest in building an arena in East Valley Scottsdale. Source saying there is a third confidential option. There is hope that they are able to finalize something soon, with the team moving in three or four years. Though it doesn’t seem likely with the ownership focusing on local options, there is still a chance of relocation to a city like Quebec City.
