Rumors: Hamonic – Ducks, Flames, Oilers, Wild and Jets

On Travis Hamonic …

  • Damien Cox of Sportsnet: Ducks GM Bob Murray has been on Travis Hamonic for months now. It appears that some GMs have known about Hamonic’s situation before others. Some think that Hamonic would go to Anaheim, even though he wasn’t on the initial list. The Ducks have the right pieces in young defenseman – Hampus Lindholm, Sami Vatanen, Cam Fowler and Shea Theodore. Orange County is further from Winnipeg than Brooklyn is though.
  • The Flames are interested in Hamonic, but they won’t trade T.J. Brodie. The Islanders likely don’t want Dougie Hamilton.
  • The Oilers probably don’t want to trade Darnell Nurse. There was some speculation of a Justin Schultz – Jordan Eberle package.
  • Wild’s Jonas Brodin is a coveted defenseman, and Marco Scandella is currently out with an injury.
  • The Islanders like Jacob Trouba, but that would be costly for the Jets.
  • Brian Lawton: Think it’s highly unlikely that Hamonic ends up in Winnipeg.
  • Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun: The Islanders asked the Flames for T.J. Brodie and were told no. A source that is close to the Flames said that the Islanders asked about Dougie Hamilton. The Flames aren’t considering trading Hamilton.
  • Chris Nichols of Today’s Slapshot: Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet 960 on Travis Hamonic and the Ducks.

“The other thing that’s going on with Anaheim right now is I was told on the weekend that Anaheim made a pitch for Hamonic, but it was kind of like – L.A. there’s no match. Detroit looked at it, there’s no match.

“Now, I think – and Damien deserves credit for this too – I’m not convinced now that Anaheim is out on this. Because they have defensemen they can trade and if the Islanders decide that ‘We’ve got to make the best trade for ourselves,’ Anaheim might be the fit.

“And I just wonder – I don’t know if Hamonic is willing to go to Anaheim or not, but I think they’re in on this. And I think they want to be in on this.”

On how much say Hamonic has on the team, or if Garth Snow will do what’s best for the team.

“I do know there were a number of teams that reached out and were told it wasn’t going to be a match. Whether it was because it wasn’t a preferred destination or they didn’t have what the Islanders wanted, I’m not 100 percent sure. But I do think that they are trying to put him in a spot as best as they can where he’d prefer to go.

“… I do think if Calgary wants to get in on this, it’s going to have to be a three-way deal. But I still think there are a couple of teams – and Winnipeg and Anaheim are among them – who can do this directly. It’s just a matter of how patient everyone wants to be.”
