Rumors II: Kopitar, Backes, Okposo, Ladd, Elias, and More

  • David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period: Contract talks between the LA Kings and Anze Kopitar didn’t really get going until mid-September, and they haven’t really progressed that far.

Unless something changes really quick, Kopitar will be starting the season without a new deal. Kopitar’s agent, Pat Brisson, wouldn’t comment.

Brisson also represents Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane and their eight-year, $84 million extensions. Two sources have told TFP that Kopitar’s camp presented the Kings an eight-year, $84 million offer, and it could still be on the table. Toews and Kopitar are comparables.

The Kings also have pending UFA Milan Lucic, and if they want to re-sign him as well at some point, they may have to make some moves before the start of next season.

Pagnotta thinks contract talks between the Kings and Kopitar’s camp will continue at least for the start of the season, but if things drag out, Kopitar could shut down talks. Have been told the Kings haven’t made a formal offer.

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks thinks that David Backes falls into the “potential contract extension/trade deadline distraction” group.

Brooks wonders if the Islanders will look to trade pending UFA Kyle Okposo.

Andrew Ladd and Dustin Byfuglien could be two the most coveted rentals at the trade deadline.

Canucks Brandon Prust will be a rental at the deadline.

Brooks thinks the Devils will trade Patrik Elias.

Will the Hurricanes trade Eric Staal?

  • Jeremy Rutherford: Expect the Blues to sign Scott Gomez, but there has been no announcement yet.
  • Ken Campbell: Source saying Raffi Torres hasn’t decide yet if he’ll appeal his suspension.
