- Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Senators defenseman Marc Methot will be a UFA at the end of this upcoming season, and if they are able/want to sign him to a contract extension, they will get him at a “hometown discount.” He would be their best option as new captain if they can lock him up. The Senators have locked up Clarke MacArthur and Mark Borowiecki to contract extensions, with Bobby Ryan appearing to be the next priority for the Sens.
“Things have been very professional, and we’re just trying to sort it out,” said Methot, who currently draws a salary of $3 million. “I’m in a new position now. I’ve never been through this. It’s a new experience for me, being a pending UFA.
“I feel very good. I feel very good about my game, and where I’m at in my career, competence-wise, going into this season. I’m not necessarily in a big rush to do anything.”
“I do love being an Ottawa Senator, because I grew up here watching the team,” he said. “It’s an honor to be able to play in your home city. It’s a privilege.”
Methot on if he’d like to get a contract extension done before the start of training camp.
“There’s pros and cons to both,” he said. “We all know I want to play here. Free agency is always around the corner, also. It’s a tough position to be in for me. I’m just going to let my agent take care of the rest of that.
“I’m comfortable playing (without a new deal).”
