- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Stars GM Jim Nill said that he’s not “shopping” goaltender Kari Lehtonen, but added that he’s studying their goaltending situation. Reports came out this week that Jussi Rynnas was considering moving to the KHL, something Nill admitted was true. Rynnas has been given permission to look for work in other leagues. Trading Lehtonen would be complicated. If Rynnas leaves and they let Jhonas Enroth hit free agency, their goaltending depth would be thin.
“It’s a hot button topic on a lot of teams, because it’s such an important position,” Nill said. “We’re not the only ones looking at goaltending right now.”
- Mike Heika of the Dallas Morning News: Looking at some free agent defensemen that could help the Stars.
1. Mike Green – Coming off a season where he made $6 million and has been critized for defensive game. He would give the Stars three right handed defensemen (John Klingberg and Jason Demers) and would help out their power play. He doesn’t seem like a fit unless they want to do some shuffling on their blueline.
2. Cody Franson – He could be the most intriguing free agent for the Stars. Problem for the Stars is that there could be a bidding war for him and it might take an over-payment to get him.
3. Adam McQuaid – The Stars could use a solid physical defensive defenseman. Injuries have been a bit of an issue the past two seasons. Shouldn’t be to expensive to sign.
4. Johnny Oduya – Will be 34-years old at the start of next season, which isn’t ideal for the Stars. He’s also a left-handed shot, which isn’t really what the Stars need. He does bring great playoff experience. He’s dependable and consistent. Would be a low risk signing.
5. Paul Martin – He’s a more skilled and more expensive version of Oduya. Coming off a season where he made $5 million. A smart veteran who can log minutes. He’s from Minnesota and might get some interest from the Wild.
