Rumors IV: Maple Leafs, Red Wings and Lightning

  • Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun: The Maple Leafs had hoped by now that Jonathan Bernier would have established himself as a No. 1 goalie, but he has been inconsistent. The Maple Leafs will have to decide how to proceed with the pending RFA. He would obviously prefer a long-term deal, but the Leafs may be looking to limit the term and dollar amount of a deal.Potential Leafs coaching candidates: Coaches that are still working – Mike Babcock, Todd McLellan, Ken Hitchcock and Dave Tippett. Coaches that are already available – Peter DeBoer. No interest in Dan Bylsma. The Leafs have had some interest in Jets prospect Alexander Burmistrov.
  • Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: The Wings aren’t desperate to make a deal unlike the Bruins and Canadiens. The Wings have plenty of cap space, $9 million, if they want to make a move. They may be better off holding on to their young talent and draft picks.
  • Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times: Lightning GM Steve Yzerman doesn’t appear to be close to making a trade.

“We’ve got a good group that’s all coming up together,” Cooper said. “That’s where you have to balance — are you going to blow this up to make a run at something now, or are we going to keep growing together and add some long-term pieces?

“I think you’re looking for pieces to the puzzle that make sense and fit. I don’t think we’re in a situation where we are bringing in guys to replace guys. It’s more, do we have enough depth in case we get injuries? And I’m sure every GM in the league, including ours, is working their tail off to see what they can do to help the team down the stretch. But if nothing happens, I like our group.”

The Lightning scouted the Leafs-Hurricanes game, with Andrej Sekera a potential trade target. They have also been watching the Oilers, with Jeff Petry available. Coyotes Zbynek Michalek is available as well.

  • David Pagnotta: Addressing again – Jonathan Bernier said that he’s not close to a contract extension. The Leafs are focusing on the trade deadline. Talks have not started.
  • Ian Shantz: Joffrey Lupul said his heart in Toronto, but realizes that with their record that he could be dealt.
  • Jonas Siegel: Maple Leafs Daniel Winnik said that he’s approaching every game like it’s his last.
