2014-15 Team Outlook:

In 2013-14 the Sharks continued what has become an annual trend in that they were an elite team in the regular season, and failed to translate that into playoff success.

After gaining a 3-0 series lead over the Los Angeles Kings in their first round divisional series, the Sharks ensued to lose four consecutive games and be ousted from the playoffs in the most dramatic way yet.

While I attribute their series loss to the soon-to-be Stanley Cup champions to some bad puck luck and the injury to their best defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic more than anything else, many are buying into the narratives that a lack of leadership lead to their demise.

The Sharks certainly helped fuel that fire by doubling down and adding gritty players labeled as quality locker room guys in John Scott and Michael Haley, while re-signing Mike Brown, and stripping Joe Thornton of his ‘C’. I have a hard time believing that’s the real issue, though.

After this year’s collapse, Sharks GM Doug Wilson promised big changes and, luckily for Sharks fans, he never really came through on that.

The team has had some tough times in the postseason, but their group of core players stacks up with the league’s best, and breaking them up likely would do more harm than good.

Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski are all still very productive, while Tomas Hertl, Logan Couture and Vlasic have developed into star players.

San Jose should once again be one of the best teams in hockey next season. With an easier playoff draw and a little luck on their side, they may finally find that playoff success they’re starving for.
