The Arizona Coyotes have traded Sam Gagner and either a conditional 2016 4th round pick or a 2017 3rd round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers for Nicklas Grossmann and Chris Pronger. Sam Carchidi saying the Coyotes have the choice of which pick it is.

The 25-year old Gagner was drafted 6th overall in the 2007 draft by the Oilers. He carries a $3.2 million cap hit.

The 30-year old Grossman was drafted 56th overall in the second round of the 2004 draft by the Stars. He carries a $3.5 million cap hit.

Chris Johnston: Pronger is due $575,000 the next two years but carries $4.941M cap hit.

Chris Johnston: The Flyers will retain $500,000 of Grossmann’s salary.

Elliotte Friedman: “Also allows PHI some off-season flexibility. Pronger counts against their cap in the summer.”

Frank Seravalli: “If #Flyers end up buying out Gagner, as proposed, they’d essentially have moved Pronger ($4.94M) plus Grossmann ($3.5M) for $633K buyout hit”

James Mirtle: “If Flyers buyout Sam Gagner, it will cost very little, even on cap. He’s under 26 so they would only pay one-third of his salary.”

James Mirtle: “Why trade Pronger’s deal? Allows Flyers to exceed cap in off-season; gives them lot more maneuverability. And helps Coyotes reach floor.”

James Mirtle: “There’s going to be several of these “move money” deals in the NHL in coming days in my opinion. Part of cap world.”

Sarah McLellan: “As for Grossman, experienced defenseman who has familiarity with Tippett from their days in Dallas.”
