- Team Outlook from McKeen’s Hockey Guide:After Vancouver’s second straight fast exit from the playoffs, head coach Alain Vigneault was shown the door and John Tortorella was brought in. Given Tortorella’s reputation, that would have been the big move during any other offseason, although not this time.
That’s because Canucks GM Mike Gillis ended his very public efforts to move Roberto Luongo by agreeing to a trade with the New Jersey Devils…for Cory Schneider. The move seemed to shock Luongo, who had accepted that he was going to be traded and even seemed eager for a fresh start. Still, Luongo has indicated that he will honour his contract and goaltending remains one of the Canucks’ strengths.
The Sedin twins are another plus, although they are a step below the elite forwards who, just a few years back, took turns winning the Art Ross Trophy. Even with the twins, the Canucks weren’t more than a middling team offensively in 2013, however they should get a boost this season if Ryan Kesler can stay healthy. Kesler has endured a few surgeries over the last couple of years, but that all seems to be behind him now.
How the team adjusts to Tortorella will be a big factor. Although Tortorella obviously rubs some people the wrong way, he does have a lengthy history of success. His new approach and tactics might be what Vancouver needs to get past their recent postseason struggles and live up to their potential before Luongo and the Sedin twins’ age becomes a significant liability.
- Team Fantasy Outlook from Dobber Hockey’s 2013-14 Fantasy Guide – Over a 150 pages of fantasy goodness:The lowdown on: Zack Kassian – The skilled, bruising power forward is progressing too slowly for a lot of fantasy owners’ tastes, but in reality he is probably on the fast track. Still only 22, he’s probably going to be a 20-goal scorer (if he stays healthy for all 82 games, which I suggest in my projection won’t happen). His size and upside will see to it that he keeps getting extended looks on the Sedin line and one of these seasons it will work. If I were to guess, it would be in his fourth or fifth year – so look for something big from him in 2014-15.
When Kesler was healthy he played a lot on a line with Hansen. However, Hansen performed far better when Kesler was on the shelf. Hansen had 22 points in 31 games with Kesler out of the lineup, but just five in 16 with him in. And no, that’s not because he played with the Sedin twins. Just two of Hansen’s 28 points last year were with the twins.
Garrison produced at a 0.41 points-per-game clip over the 12 games that Bieksa was hurt, but a 0.31 clip otherwise. Less cannibalization of his power-play time.
Burrows picked up 19 of his 24 points playing with the Sedins (surprising nobody), which is about 79% of his production from around 50% of his shifts. This obviously means a wide range of potential point totals for Burrows, relying heavily on who he plays with. The better season that Kassian has, the worse Burrows’ numbers will be.
Booth has just 86 points in 175 games since being out with a concussion back in 2009. Before the hit, he had 103 in 154. Not the same player and his injury risk is too great to own in a keeper league. However, a one-year roto league may have some mild interest, as he can be quickly and easily benched.
