NHL Rumors: The New York Rangers Taking Calls on Alexis Lafreniere

Host: “Dave, is Alexis Lafreniere‘s name out there as well?”

Dave Pagnotta: “I think it’s a bit of a long shot for that to happen now. I think the Rangers would be open to exploring that. I think they’re open to it now, but I just think the magnitude of that particular deal is more likely to occur in the offseason, not out of the question now, but there’s a willingness to listen. There’s a willingness to listen on other guys.

Braden Schneider and Vincent Trocheck are guys that I think are very likely candidates to be moved by the trade deadline. And I’m also curious, guys, about Adam Fox and what they decide to do there. He’s got a full no-move. He’s on LTIR right now. He’s trying to get back. Could that be something by the deadline? Could that be something by the draft? Around the draft? I think there’s a willingness to consider those options as well for the Rangers. But this is another scenario where I think he and Lafreniere are probably summer-type moves if they do occur.”

Will the Montreal Canadiens Move Patrik Laine?

Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period joined TSN Radio in Montreal and was asked what the Montreal Canadiens will do with Patrik Laine.

NHL Rumors: Montreal Canadiens, and Young Trade Asset Tiers

Host: “Patrick Laine is practicing with the team on the ice. Regular jersey, good to go. Canadiens don’t have a roster spot. They’re healthy, so they have to move a body to get him on the roster, or the Canadiens just don’t really have a spot for him, even if he is healthy, and can’t fit him into a lineup that’s winning more games than losing.

Is there any feel for a potential Laine move here at the deadline, not this one, but maybe the actual deadline in March? Is there anything outside of Montreal that name pops up?

Dave Pagnotta: “Interesting, I mean, I’ve wondered about this as well, where his fit is with this group. Especially now that the second line with (Juraj) Slafkovsky, (Oliver) Kapanen, and (Ivan) Demidov has been so successful and is clicking. It’s clear that the Habs would love to find somebody who can have that type of chemistry with (Cole) Caulfield and (Nick) Suzuki.

NHL Rumors: The Montreal Canadiens Still Want to Add to Their Roster

(Kirby) Dach’s there now, scored night. Would you give Laine that opportunity? I think if you do explore the possibility of moving him. You’re looking at a) teams that have the cap space to accommodate. I don’t know if the Canadiens, I mean, he’s on an expiring contract. I don’t know if they want to give him away, per se. I don’t get that sense at all. But where is he on that roster?

I think they would rather, I think the preference would be, and this may like, there may be teams looking at this scenario going, well, we’ve got the cap space, we can try to make this work. We like the player. Let’s take a shot here. But I think the Canadiens still feel like, if he’s healthy, this could be somebody that certainly benefits the roster, and can we find the right fit with him now playing at the top, we’ll see kind of

Either way. I think you need to get, he needs to get some games in, and they’ve got to figure out how to make that happen in order for them to even consider that possibility.”
