Calgary and Montreal Musings Nearing the NHL Trade Deadline

Teams are calling the Calgary Flames and are wondering about Blake Coleman, Nazem Kadri, Ryan Lomberg, MacKenzie Weegar.

The Calgary Flames May Move MacKenzie Weegar BUT…

The Fourth Period: The Calgary Flames have talked about a potential MacKenzie Weegar move but again, this all comes down to fit and space. Weegar currently possesses a full no-trade clause. He will have a say in wherever he ends up.

The belief is that Weegar is less likely to be moved compared to, say Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman. Coleman already has been involved in a multitude of rumors and it is a little secret that teams like Tampa Bay and Dallas would have some interest. Craig Conroy expects to talk to Weegar soon, so we may know who goes where from Calgary soon enough.

Right now, it has been made clear that nothing is imminent or about to take place for any of these three players.

UPDATE: Naturally, according to Elliotte Friedman, we have this gem. Weegar could be off to Utah if he signs off on it. Again, stay tuned!

The Patrik Laine Saga…

The Fourth Period: The Montreal Canadiens are still circling the wagons when it comes to Patrik Laine. Literally, this is the riddle wrapped in an enigma. So far, teams have shown interest, but no one has been that close on price. Even the Los Angeles Kings have said thanks but no thanks for now. The key part may be that for now.

It has been widely speculated that Montreal and his agent have been trying to find a trade partner for Laine, who is again in the final year of a four-year contract at $34.8 million.

A few other teams are definitely in the mix but are currently lurking in the weeds.

Naturally, early on Wednesday, it has been suggested that Los Angeles circled back on Laine. Rink Royalty and others have said the obvious. Los Angeles plays Montreal on Saturday. It makes some sense.

All quiet in Toronto and then it was not…

James Murphy of RG.org: Craig Berube said there would be no roster management, and then there was a correction. The expectation is that Toronto will mostly, if not fully, sell. Late updates suggest this with three players getting scratched. Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Scott Laughton, and Bobby McMann will not play against New Jersey on Wednesday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have less than a 3% chance of making the playoffs. With so many teams ahead of them in the standings, expecting to make headway with this little runway feels less and less likely.

Team sources say that Toronto wants to merely sell off a few pieces if possible. Some of their bigger names will not be moved. That has been made pretty clear. It will be intriguing to see if a goaltender does get moved by Friday.
