Allen’s Team-by-team look: Buyer, Seller or Trader

Kevin Allen of USA Today: Allen looks at buyers, sellers and traders.

Anaheim Ducks: buyers – Looking for a center.

Boston Bruins: buyers – Would like a scorer and/or a veteran defenseman.

Buffalo Sabres: sellers – GM Darcy Regier said there are no untouchables.  Robyn Regehr, Jordan Leopold and Jochen Hecht could be moved. Teams will call about Drew Stafford.

Calgary Flames: sellers – Jay Bouwmeester could be moved. Miikka Kiprusoff has told management he won’t report if traded.

Carolina Hurricanes: buyer – Have been looking for a defenseman for awhile.

Chicago Blackhawks: buyer – GM Stan Bowman would like to add a third or fourth line center.

Columbus Blue Jackets: trader – Want to improve team but not compromise long-term goals. Will get calls on Vinny Prospal.

Colorado Avalanche: seller – Don’t have many assets to move. Teams want O’Reilly, but they can’t deal him.

Dallas Stars: buyer and seller – Should be a seller, but they are trying to make the playoffs. Teams will be interested in Derek Roy. They’d like to re-sign Jaromir Jagr.

Detroit Red Wings: buyer – Could use some defensive help and a scorer.

Edmonton Oilers: buyer and seller – Teams will be interested Ryan Whitney. Oilers trying to re-sign Ladislav Smid. Would like some pieces to help them now.

Florida Panthers: seller – Their most desirable players are out for the season, Stephen Weiss and Kris Versteeg.

Los Angeles Kings: buyer – May stay pat as GM Dean Lombardi doesn’t see a lot of attractive options. Teams will call about Jonathan Bernier.

Minnesota Wild: buyer – Looking for scoring help, but don’t have a lot of cap room and don’t want to move prospects.

Montreal Canadiens: buyer – Need cap space, but not likely to move players out. Might add a role player. Don’t want to upset chemistry.

Nashville Predators: buyer – Could use a proven scorer. Could move some of their defensive depth.

New Jersey Devils: buyer – Expected to be active at the deadline. Scoring depth an issue.

New York Islanders: trader – In a playoff battle, so GM Garth Snow has to consider moves to improve now.

New York Rangers: buyer and seller – Have been looking for a point-producing defenseman all season. Would move Marian Gaborik, but he makes $7.5 million next year and a no-trade clause.

Ottawa Senators: undecided – Waiting for medical reports on Jason Spezza before deciding what to do. If Spezza coming back soon, may make a deal or two to complement.

Philadelphia Flyers: buyer – Looking for a blue-chip defenseman. Daniel Briere would have been a trade asset but he’s hurt.

Phoenix Coyotes: trader – Need to make the playoffs. Need scoring help and could move Keith Yandle to get it.

Pittsburgh Penguins: buyer –  (written before they acquired Iginla) Could make an Iginla trade work.

St. Louis Blues: buyer – Top-four defenseman, but likely won’t get it done before the summer.

San Jose Sharks: trader – Want to stay in the playoff race, but move some players. Ryane Clowe and Dan Boyle getting interest.

Tampa Bay Lightning: trader – Might be idle. No potential free agents and some players have tough contracts to move.

Toronto Maple Leafs: buyer and seller – Looking to upgrade and will consider goalie options. Could look to move Clarke MacArthur.

Vancouver Canucks: buyer – Looking for third line center or a defenseman. Not a lot of salary cap space. Unlikely that they move Roberto Luongo to free up space.

Washington Capitals: undecided – Challenging for playoff spot. Tough decision what to do with pending UFA Mike Ribeiro.

Winnipeg Jets: trader – Have to look at deals to help them now. If they consider moving pending UFA Nik Antropov, would need to find a replacement. Hard to move defenseman Ron Hainsey and his 23 minutes a game.
