On the Detroit Red Wings …
Ansar Khan of MLive: Forward Gustav Nyquist has another year left on his deal. Will the Red Wings consider re-sign him at likely more than $5 million a season? The Red Wings need to move out salary and stockpile picks and prospects.
A source is saying that the Wings will try to trade Nyquist or Tomas Tatar before the deadline.
Nyquist has a no-trade clause, so he has a lot of control over what happens.
“That’s for sure a bonus for me, that I’m able to make that decision, to have that power,” Nyquist said.
The Red Wings haven’t approached Nyquist about waiving his no-trade. He carries a $4.75 million salary cap hit, but has a $5.5 million salary next year.
When asked if he’d consider waiving his no-trade clause, Nyquist said:
“It depends on the situation I guess, but it’s not something I want to speculate on. Until it happens, I don’t want to have that on my mind.”
The Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals have shown interest in pending UFA defenseman Mike Green.
The Wings would also like to move either Jimmy Howard or Petr Mrazek. The New York Islanders may be interested in adding a goalie.
Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press: Red Wings GM Ken Holland on the approaching trade deadline.
“I’m working the phones, I’m trying to see what the other teams in the league are thinking,” Holland said. “We are obviously not a buyer, we are not spending future assets to try to get in.
“We’ll see here over the next week what direction we are going, but I am aware we are eight points out and games are running out.”
There is trade interest in Mike Green and Gustav Nyquist, with both needing to be willing to waive their no-trade clause.
Goaltender Jimmy Howard has received some interest, but not much for Petr Mrazek.
“I’ve talked to lots of teams over the last week and 10 days, and I’m doubling back with a number of them,” Holland said. “We’d like to get assets, open up spots for a kid or two for next season.”
