Injury Notes: Pronger, Calvert, Neal, Lindholm, Helm, Pacioretty and JVR

  • James O’Brien of Pro Hockey Talk: (citing a Hockey News feature) Flyers GM Paul Holmgren has finally admitted that defenseman Chris Prongerwill never play in the NHL again.

“I’ll say it, Chris is never going to play again,” Holmgren said. “I have no problems saying it.”

Issues could arise by the Flyers keeping him on the LTIR to avoid the cap hit if he were to retire from his 35+ contract. Pronger has a cap hit of $4.94 million that ends after the 2016-17 season.

  • Rob Mixer: Blue Jackets Matt Calvert will be out about six weeks after abdominal surgery.
  • Pittsburgh Penguins: The Penguins put James Neal on the IR.
  • Michael Smith: Hurricanes Elias Lindholm skated yesterday morning.
  • Ansar Khan: Red Wings GM Ken Holland said that Darren Helm will go to Grand Rapids of the AHL on a conditioning stint. Helm will practice today, play two games, then be activated for Oct. 26th against the Rangers.
  • Brian Wilde: Canadiens Max Pacioretty left last night with a lower-body injury. Wilde thinks it looks more like a groin injury than a knee injury.
  • Chris Johnston: Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle said that James van Riemsdyk’s injury didn’t happen during a game and added  “Upper body. We’re surprised what happened.”
