Kesler’s recovery … Canucks – Doan didn’t talk contract, but they did with Arnott … Why the Leafs shouldn’t get Bernier … Brooklyn arena

  • Ben Kuzma of the Vancouver Province: Ryan Kesler’s agent on his shoulder surgery recovery,

“He’s not ahead of schedule and there’s no rushing him back. He’s on course to return in December and he’s not returning until he’s 100 per cent. Don’t expect him until December.”

Kelser also had wrist surgery on June 27th to clear up some mild discomfort and tendon issues. At Shane Doan’s meetings with the Canucks on Tuesday, contract structure wasn’t discussed. According to assistant GM Laurence Gilman,

“I know him but he had not met Mike or Francesco , so we spent some time getting to know each other and letting him get familiar with our organization and discuss where he would fit. It was an opportunity for him to learn about us and for us to get an understanding of what he’s about and what he’s looking for.”

  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: The Canucks have held preliminary talks with free agent center Jason Arnott. It’s likely the Canucks would hold off on an Arnott signing until the Shane Doan sweepstakes are over.
  • Luke Fox of Sportsnet: Fox lists 5 reasons the Maple Leafs should not trade for Jonathan Bernier. 1. They already have him – James Reimer. 2. Bernier wants to be a starter now, but might not deserve it. 3. The Kings aren’t desperate enough 4. He’s not as good as you might hope 5. It would take away from Option A – Roberto Luongo
  • Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun: Senators Jakob Silfverberg may be pencilled in as their 1st line right winger, but if he can handle the demands of an 82 games schedual is a question mark. The Senators currently sit at just over $50 million for 20 players, with the old CBA floor set at around $54 million. It may drop under the new CBA. Silfverberg and Mika Zibanejad are not included in those numbers, and carry $900,000 and $1.744,167 hit. Another area of concern for the Senators is their toughness. They lost Matt Carkner to the Islanders, who would have been a perfect 6/7 defenseman.
  • George Richards via twitter: When asked about latest on Roberto Luongo rumors, Richards responded with “Nothing”

Denis Hamill of the NY Daily News: Bruce Ratner (CEO of Forest City Ratner),

“Sixty days and we have a sports arena again in Brooklyn,” Ratner says, as steelworkers weld the canopy behind him in a shower of blue sparks. “It’ll be 60 days till Jay-Z’s opening night of eight sold-out shows at the arena. And 93 days until the Brooklyn Nets become the first professional sports team to play in Brooklyn since O’Malley took the Brooklyn Dodgers west in 1957.”

“And I am trying like hell to get the Islanders to make Barclays Center their new hockey home,” says Ratner, sweeping his hand across the big arena where workers in cherry-picker buckets installed acoustic panels on the domed ceiling as others installed black seats. “They will play a pre-season game here against the Devils.”

Tim Panaccio of CSN Philly talks about the Flyers. Maybe calling the Sharks about Dan Boyle or Douglas Murray
