Around the Boards: Savard’s hometown discount, Burke close to making a move? Rozsival on the Move?

  • Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe: Talk about your hometown discount. The Boston Bruins and Marc Savard have been talking contract extension recently and are reportedly close to 7 year, $32 million deal. That would be a nice cap hit of $4.7 million. Most expected him to sign for around $6 – 6.5 million a year average. But as we all know with most contracts nowadays, it will be front loaded and will most likely be average around $5.5 million for the first 5 years and then drop off for the last 2. Savard is 32 years old.
  • Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun:  Patience is running thin in Toronto.

“If we don’t start winning, we have two options,” said Burke, who was back in Toronto yesterday. “One, we make a trade and if I could make one that puts us in the playoffs I would. But they’re hard to make (in the salary cap world) and I think there have only been three of them around the league so far this season.

“Two, we send somebody on a one-way down and call up the kids. That’s the next step. We waive them and send them down and if we lose ’em (on a waiver claim), we lose ’em.”

  • Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Brooks thinks the NY Rangers should get rid of Michal Rozsival and his $5 million cap hit.

Deleting him by the end of the month via trade or demotion would clear an additional $3.4M of space that increases proportionately with the season.

If only it was that easy Larry.

  • Rich Chere of the Star Ledger: Devils fans and fantasy owners of Patrik Elias are happy that he’s back, but they might not be thrilled when he said “I don’t know if I’ll ever feel 100 percent this year”. He is still feeling some discomfort in his groin with his lower-body-injury.
