Media Thoughts on Subban – Weber Trade

Thoughts from the media on the P.K. Subban – Shea Weber trade …

Pierre LeBrun: “Lost in all this, the Preds are going to face some massive cap recapture penalties if Weber retires before end of his contract. Preds paid him $14 M per season last 4 seasons but took $7.857 M cap hit. So if he retires before end of deal, big penalties for Nashville. But to get a 27-year-old star like Subban, the Preds have no problem if they face those Weber cap recapture penalties. Worth it for them.”

Brian Wilde: “Bergevin says Friday afternoon. Poile called. Offered Weber. Revisited yesterday.”

James Mirtle: “Shea Weber has an $8-million signing bonus on Friday the Predators avoid.”

Bob McKenzie: “Technically, Subban NMC/NTC that was supposed to kick in July 1 does NOT automatically travel from MTL to NSH. Up to Preds to decide fate. That decision, near as I can tell, has not been made yet by NSH. We will see. Something to keep in mind, tho: a NMC/NTC from Preds but NSH didn’t agree. Which, of course, allowed NSH to make this trade in first place because Weber had no NMC/NTC.

Renaud Lavoie: “Predators made the only “serious” offer for PK Subban. No surprise, Canucks made one, but it was rejected. Not enough on the table.”

  • Brian Wilde: “So then why trade him. Because they didn’t like him. So they were duplicitous. One can’t have both sides of the coin”

Adrian Dater: “I’ll agree with that. There will come a time when Habs want out of that deal. But not for five years”

Gregg Krupa: “intense feeling shea webber walking into a no-win situation in montreal, which is not where one wants to play hockey in no win situation.”

Anthony Petrielli: “In six months, David Poile traded his 2D and his 3D for a 1C and another 1D. That is just ridiculous.”

Spector’s Hockey: “We’ll find out if Weber still has “tread on the tires” with a defense where he won’t have nearly as much support as he had in Nashville.”

Stu Cowan: “I wonder if Geoff Molson @GMolsonCHC will sleep well tonight. He obviously signed off on P.K. Subban trade and believed he was a problem.”

Gord Miller: “Bottom line on the Subban trade, from an NHL GM: “If you think Subban is one of the 15 best D-men in the NHL, it’s a bad deal. I don’t.”

Jimmy Murphy: “Shea Weber is an amazing defenseman & by all accounts good guy. But PK Subban is out of this world player and person with huge heart!”

Conor McKenna: “Gonna be interesting to see what Bergevin says to try and do damage control. I think the word “character” will come up more than once.”

Conor McKenna: “PK Subban has more character in his toenails than Marc Bergevin and Michel Therrien do combined.”

Ryan Rishaug: “Have to wonder if the Subban trade was directly tied to Hall deal. Once Taylor went, Subban goes. Perhaps swap was still possibility late?”

Stu Cowan: “So Michel Therrien stays and P.K. Subban goes? I guess that makes sense to #Habs GM Marc Bergevin but noboby else – except Geoff”

Stu Cowan: “@TSNBobMcKenzie was right again when he said don’t believe #Habs aren’t looking to trade Subban. Trust Bob … don’t trust Marc Bergevin”

Gus Katsaros: “Beaulieu better have his legs next season. Markov can’t carry the rushing duties solely”

Jason Lewis: “Subban (27), Josi (25), Ekholm (25), Ellis (25) top 4. Have mercy.”

David Pagnotta: “Weber’s cap hit is $7.857M, but makes $12M in salary next season & 2017-18. Subban’s cap hit is $9M, makes $11M next season & 2017-18.”
