- Joe McDonald of ESPN: Bruins owner and NHL chairman of the board of governors Jeremy Jacobs on the possibility of expansion.
“There’s a lot of content there. There’s a lot of capability there, but I don’t know if there’s a desire or will within the board of the existing franchises for expansion yet,” Jacobs said. “They both made pretty interesting proposals. Both have very legitimate arenas in place and organizations in place. There’s a capacity out there, but I don’t know if there’s a will from a league standpoint.”
Despite the history and the new arena in Quebec City, Jacobs thinks that Las Vegas is a more viable market for an NHL team.
“Take a look at what’s gone up in Nevada — it’s scary. I mean, it really is. It’s a heck of an arena built there, and there’s a strong interest there,” Jacobs said. “Balance the fact, Quebec has a great hockey interest, it’s an extraordinarily small market.”
- Eric Stephens: The Ducks have assigned Max Friberg, Michael Sgarbossa, Matt Hackett and Ondrej Kase to the AHL, and recalled Brian McGrattan.
- Bruce Garrioch: The Senators put Mark Fraser on waivers yesterday.
- Curtis Pashelka of the San Jose Mercury News: Only two of defensemen Matt Tennyson, Dylan DeMelo, and Mirco Mueller will make the Sharks opening night roster.
- Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times: Ben Bishop’s backup for the start of the season is still not known yet. The Lightning claimed Kevin Poulin off waivers on Sunday from the Islanders. Kristers Gudlevskis is the other goalie in camp. The Lightning could also see who is put on waivers when teams submit their final rosters on Tuesday.
“I don’t think you have to make that decision at this point,” Cooper said. “There’s so many different scenarios. I don’t think we can sit here and say just because the goalie we keep as the guy that’s going to back up (Bishop) is going to be the guy that’s going to play games. Someone may go to the American league, play some games and come up.”
Poulin would have to clear waivers, Gudlevskis wouldn’t.
