Morning notes on: Doan, Sharks, Predators, Maple Leafs, CBA, Messier, Janus and some teams that use statistical analysis

  • Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area: A source is saying the San Jose Sharks are among the favorites to sign Shane Doan. The Sharks have flown “under the radar.”
  • Jesse Spector of the Sporting News: Spector notes that even though Doan would like a multi-year deal, and since he really wants to stay in Phoenix, he does have the option to sign a 1 year deal. There is no way the league can relocate the team this year.
  • Josh Cooper of the Tennessean: It’s unlikely that Shane Doan will pay a visit to the Predators, but it may be due to his familiarity with the team and market.

“Based on the conversations we’ve had, he is very comfortable with the city and knows a lot about it,” Poile said on Friday. “He knows some of our guys very well and feels very comfortable about it. His agent knows the city quite well. His agent represents baseball players and some of his clients live here.”

“First and foremost we hope it succeeds in Phoenix and that he re-signs there because that’s where he wants to play,” Poile said. “If it doesn’t work for him, we would be very interested, and we’ve made that very clear to him and to his agent.”

  • Doug McIntyre of ESPN: McIntyre list 3 fixes for the Maple Leafs: 1. Find a No. 1 goaltender – mentions Roberto Luongo and Jonathan Bernier 2. Find another shutdown defenseman – could try to pry Douglas Murray out of San Jose. Tyler Bozak is expendable, and may be time to move Nazem Kadri 3. Find a decent center – might be worth taking a chance on Jason Arnott.
  • Chris Kuc via twitter: The NHL and NHLPA will be back at the negotiating table Tuesday through Friday in New York.
  • Brad Ziemer of the Vancouver Sun: Mark Messier was awarded a $6 million settlement from a grievance over money owed from the Canucks. Messier had signed a 5 year deal with the Canucks in 1997 for $6 million a season. The $6 million came from deferred money that he felt he was owed. It’s believed that part of his contract had to do with Messier getting compensated for the increase of franchise value during his time with the team.
  • Damian Cristodero of the Tampa Bay Times: Lightning prospect Jaroslav Janus may be heading to Europe to play next year as they have a bunch of AHL goaltending prospects, “mutually agreed the best thing … is for him to play as many games as possible next year. We told the agent we would help any way we could to help achieve that. I think they’re looking in Europe.”
  • Adam Gretz of CBS Sports: Some teams that use statistical analysis in their front office are the Lightning, Flames, Penguins, Hurricanes and Coyotes.
